1. the time has come to cease, stop sth.:

- it's (high) time to stop <to quit>;

- you <heetc> ought to know when to stop <to quit>;

- you've (he's etc) got to know when to call it quits;

- enough is enough;

- there's a limit to everything;

- [in limited contexts] your <his etc> time is up;

- you <he etc> shouldn't overdo it;

- let's not overdo it.

     ♦ "Слушайте, оставьте споры, пора и честь знать, ведь остальные спать хотят" (Шолохов 2). "Enough argument, you fellows. There's a limit to everything. Other people want some sleep" (2a).

     ♦ "...А старухе скажи, что, дескать, пора умирать, зажилась, надо знать и честь" (Лермонтов 1). "And tell the old woman it's time she died; she's lived long enough and ought to know when her time's up" (1b).

2. the time has come for s.o. to leave, go away:

- [in limited contexts] I <you etc> have outstayed my <your etc> welcome;

- I <you etc> mustn't disturb s.o. anymore.

     ♦ [Бусыгин:] Хорошо мы погостили, весело, но пора и честь знать (Вампилов 4). [V.:] We've had a good time, enjoyed our stay, and now it's time we were on our way (4a).

     ♦ [Варя:] Что ж, господа? Третий час, пора и честь знать (Чехов 2). [V.:] Well, gentlemen? It's after two, high time you were going (2a).

     ♦ Аванесян решительно поднялся и, старательно избегая её взгляда, сделал шаг к выходу. В его поспешности было что-то суетливо-жалкое. "Хорошенького понемножку, погрелся, пора и честь знать" (Максимов 3). Avanesyan rose resolutely, and moved toward the door, carefully avoiding her eyes. There was something pathetic in his haste.
